| EXECUTIVE SUMMARY |
|
You need to centralise your
information, but you also need to share it and connect
to the outside world in a secure manner. This solution
allows you to exchange information with your internal
and external employees and to use the resources of the
Internet.
One Linux machine is configured as described in the
"Intranet" solution and a second Linux machine
is configured to serve as a firewall between internal
network machines containing sensitive information and
the rest of the Internet.
|
| CAPABILITIES |
| Sharing Internet
access - All of the
computers on the network will have access
to the Internet via the server. Only one official
Internet address will be necessary for the
server to route Internet traffic to and from
everyone. |
| Network firewall
-The server will
give all of the machines in the enterprise
access to the Internet, but to guarantee the
confidentiality of data, a security policy
will be put in place. This policy defines
which services will be accessible by the network
users. Detailed examination of the logs is
recommended for detecting intrusions from
the outside or suspicious activities. |
| Secure access -
Linux/Unix-based machines that are connected
to the Internet can be securely accessed and
administered from anywhere in the world using
encrypted communications. This convenience
ensures rapid response to many types of demands. |
| Email and fax server
-The server will
manage internal email and email to and from
the Internet. The addition of a fax-capable
modem to the server will permit everyone in
the enterprise to send and receive faxes. |
| Proxy server -
A proxy server stores the most-often visited
web pages. This reduces the reponse time when
one accesses the page again and reduces Internet
traffic. |
| File server -
The files of Windows and Unix users are centrally
stored on the Linux machine. |
| Printer server -
All of the Windows, Mac and Unix machines
on the network can print documents on any
of the printers connected to the network or
the Linux machine. |
| Groupware suite -
A modular application for the coordination
of group activities and to share informations
and document via Intranet. Modules
( Group calendar, project management, time
card system, file management, contact manager,
mail client, discussion forum). |
|
|
| Web server
- A web server can act as the "central nervous
system" of information management in an enterprise.
It is typically used for displaying largish documents
of general interest or interfacing with a database
or archives, e.g. policy, memos, vacation schedules,
catalogs, deadlines, discussion archives, etc. |
